The Flip video camera was the pioneer in pocket camcorders and still leads the pack with the release of the 3rd generation Flip Mino HD. This latest model is the first once since Flip was acquired by Cisco and raises the bar by including the ability to record true HD video in 720p.
There are two models of the camera available in either an 8GB or 4GB model. The larger capacity provides about 2 hours of recording time and the smaller one about half of that. You can find these units online and have the ability to customize their cases with images from their website or pictures you upload yourself. Both of these models of Flip Mino HD come with advanced image stabilization, which helps keep your subjects in focus when you are trying to record action shots.
The Flip Mino HD features a clear 2-inch screen to keep your subjects in frame and has a slightly larger aperture than previous models with an f2.4 lens. Another nice addition is a mini HDMI connector on the unit that allows you to watch your HD videos in 720p right on your TV from the camcorder.
The transfer of video to your PC is easy through the Flip Mino HD USB connector. The camcorder even includes editing software that allows you to tweak your clips before uploading. With all of these new features, the Flip Mino HD is still ahead of the competition by a good measure.

The Kodak PlayTouch is the latest entry into the pocket camcorder market from a company that knows how to take pictures. The original Flip MinoHD caused quite a stir among fans of pocket camcorders when it was introduced a year ago, since it was the first of their products that recorded in HD quality. An update version of this original Flip MinoHD has recently been released by Flip and is dubbed the Flip MinoHD 2nd generation. It includes several nice improvements over the original Flip MinoHD and packs a lot of value into it small case.
The first thing you’ll notice is that the internal capacity of the camcorder has been doubled to 8 GB of flash memory, which will allow you to record a solid 2 hours of HD content. While this certainly gives you more recording time, the camcorder is using the same optical chip as the original Flip Mino HD and the format is still 30 fps 720p. Even though the clips are not recorded in 1080p, they are still a pretty amazing quality for such a small device, even in low light. The internal processor of the Flip MinoHD has also been upgraded and allows for faster operation and a longer battery life.
Another nice addition to the new Flip MinoHD is a mini HDMI connector that allows you to view the content you record directly on your HDTV. The older version Flip Mino HD included a cable that required a composite video connection to your HDTV, but the HDMI standard provides a much better picture.
The new Flip MinoHD also sports a larger 2-inch anti-glare color display that is a welcome upgrade from the originals 1.5-inch. This display you to watch and delete the videos you have recorded without squinting. The familiar flip-out USB connector is still there in the new camcorder and has been improved to flip out more smoothly. All of this is delivered in a sleek brushed metal case, which is a nice cosmetic improvement over the glossy plastic case of the original. The new case is slightly thinner as well as has a more solid feel in your hands.
